This casting was designed and based on the 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback, click on the HISTORY tab above for more details about the actual 1:1 car or on the CARS tab for the full breakdown of all the casting variations.

The US Custom Mustang casting was one of the orginal Ten cars released by Mattel in June of 1968. Later in 1968, six additional castings were released. This first set of 16 castings has become known by collectors as the Sweet-16.

The casting has an opening hood that reveals a detailed zamac engine compartment. It also comes with clear glass and is seen with Cream, Tan and Dark colored plastic interiors. The Wheels have Redlines and fit on Hubs with both the front and rear wheels being the medium size. The very first US Custom Mustang was released in Blue with a matching Blue Rear Tail Panel. It is also known as the "Boneline" Mustang as it has a smaller front wheel well (matching the HK version) with the body (bone) line visible running through it. Very soon thereafter the wheel well was cut out much larger and two additional colors, Gold and Red, were released for this casting. All three of these colors have Body Colored rear tail panels Due to cost cutting steps, the Painted Tails was soon dropped from the car entirely and instead all tail panels were painted black. As time passed, there were various variations in the black painting of these tail panels.

As Mattel began the 1969 casting year, many additional colors appeared. Toward the end of 1969, Mattel started transitioning this casting to become the 1970 Boss Hoss casting. This resulted in a new window glass being created with Louvers. By this time only Blue and Orange remained as active colors for these. Many times other colors have appeared with the Louvered Rear Windows but all have shown themselves to be fakes.

By the end of 1969, this casting was dropped from the Hot Wheel lineup all together.

For the 1970 casting year, the existing US Custom Mustang was modified and remade into the new HK Boss Hoss casting.
